VAT rates across Europe
VAT (value-added tax) is a consumption tax added to most goods and services in over 170 countries. Standard rates vary by country: 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, up to 25% in Denmark and Sweden. Most countries also apply reduced rates — often 5% or 10% — to essentials such as food, books and medicine. If your rate isn't listed, pick "Custom" and type it in. This tool provides estimates only and is not tax or financial advice: for invoices and filings, check the official rate with your tax authority or an accountant.
Removing VAT: why you can't just subtract 20%
To take VAT out of a gross price you divide by 1.20 (at a 20% rate) — you don't subtract 20%. From a $120 gross price the net amount is $100, while subtracting 20% would give $96, which is wrong. The same logic applies to any rate: divide by 1.25, 1.19, 1.10 and so on. The tax itself is always the difference between the gross price and the net amount.
