Inches and centimeters: the conversion you'll use most

One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters — a definition fixed by international agreement in 1959. It's the unit behind every screen size you see: a 55-inch TV has a diagonal of about 139.7 cm, and a 27-inch monitor about 68.6 cm. The same goes for bike and car wheels: a 29" mountain bike runs rims roughly 73.7 cm across. Whenever a product listing mixes metric and imperial specs, this is the conversion doing the heavy lifting.

Going metric: miles, kilometers and everything between

A mile is 1.609 kilometers, so a 5K race is about 3.1 miles and a 10K about 6.2 — handy when a running app or a race abroad speaks metric. A foot is 30.48 cm, which is why cruising altitude of 36,000 feet works out to roughly 10,970 meters, and a yard (0.9144 m) is just shy of a meter — close enough that football-field intuition transfers almost directly. One caveat: the nautical mile used at sea and in aviation is longer, at 1.852 km, so don't mix it up with the statute mile on road signs.
