How cat years are converted

Cats mature very quickly during their first two years: at 12 months a cat is roughly the equivalent of a 15-year-old teenager, and by 24 months it has reached about 24 human years. After that, aging levels off, and the standard veterinary chart adds about 4 human years for each additional year of a cat's life. Unlike dogs, body size makes little difference: a well-cared-for indoor cat typically lives 12 to 16 years, and it's not unusual for one to pass 20 โ€” the equivalent of nearly a full human century.

A cat's life stages

Veterinarians recognize six stages: kitten (up to 6 months), junior (up to 2 years), adult (3โ€“6 years), mature (7โ€“10), senior (11โ€“14), and geriatric (15 and up). Knowing your cat's stage helps you pick the right food and schedule check-ups: from around age 7โ€“8, many vets recommend a yearly exam with blood work, since kidneys and the thyroid are the weak spots of aging cats.
