Why Instagram crops your photos (and how to avoid it)

In the feed, and especially in carousels, Instagram pushes everything toward fixed aspect ratios: post a wide landscape or a tall portrait alongside other photos and the app crops it from the center โ€” often losing exactly the part you cared about. The trick photographers and creators use is to "frame" the photo inside a square: the image stays intact, and you decide what fills the empty space instead of leaving it to the crop algorithm.

This tool adds borders above and below or on the sides, depending on your photo's orientation, and never reduces its resolution: the final square is as large as the longest side of the original.

Solid color borders or a blurred background?

White borders give a clean, portfolio-style look and work great for a minimal feed; with the color picker you can also match one of your brand colors. The blurred background, on the other hand, is the same effect used by the most popular editing apps: it fills the square with an enlarged, softened copy of the photo itself, so the border colors always harmonize with the image and the result looks like it was shot that way on purpose.
