How the time difference is calculated

Each city is tied to its official time zone from the IANA database — the same one your computer and phone use — so the difference shown already accounts for daylight saving time. When the US "springs forward" but Europe hasn't yet, or vice versa, the gap shifts for a couple of weeks, and here you always see the up-to-date value. Some countries use half-hour offsets: India, for instance, runs 9 hours and 30 minutes ahead of New York during Eastern Daylight Time.

The best time to call across time zones

Rule of thumb from the US East Coast: for Europe (+5 to +6 hours) call in the morning, which is their afternoon; for Tokyo or Sydney (+13 to +14 hours) evening works best, since it's already the next morning there. The "tomorrow" or "yesterday" badge next to a city warns you that the calendar there shows a different date than yours — handy for scheduling meetings and hitting deadlines without slipping a day.
