How to write a dollar amount in words on a check
On the amount line of a US check you spell out the dollars in words and write the cents as a fraction over 100: $1,234.56 becomes "one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100". Always include the cents, even when they are zero ("and 00/100"), and draw a line after them so nothing can be added. If the amount in words and the amount in numerals disagree, the words legally control (UCC § 3-114), which is exactly why it pays to let a tool spell it out instead of winging it. This tool provides estimates only and is not financial advice: for official documents, double-check with your bank or a professional.
Hyphens, "and", and other spelling rules
Compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen: it's "forty-two", not "forty two". In American usage the word "and" is reserved for the cents on a check ("one hundred five and 25/100"), so careful writers leave it out of the whole-number part: "one hundred five", not "one hundred and five". Larger amounts simply stack the groups, "two million three hundred thousand", with no commas or "and" needed. The tool applies all of these rules automatically, up to 999 billion.
