How to write a dollar amount in words on a check
On the amount line of a US check you spell out the dollars in words and write the cents as a fraction over 100: $1,234.56 becomes "one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100". Always include the cents, even when they are zero ("and 00/100"), and draw a line after them so nothing can be added. If the amount in words and the amount in numerals disagree, the words legally control (UCC ยง 3-114) โ which is exactly why it pays to let a tool spell it out instead of winging it. This tool provides estimates only and is not financial advice: for official documents, double-check with your bank or a professional.
Hyphens, "and", and other spelling rules
Compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen: it's "forty-two", not "forty two". In American usage the word "and" is reserved for the cents on a check ("one hundred five and 25/100"), so careful writers leave it out of the whole-number part: "one hundred five", not "one hundred and five". Larger amounts simply stack the groups โ "two million three hundred thousand" โ with no commas or "and" needed. The tool applies all of these rules automatically, up to 999 billion.
