How color harmonies work

Harmonies are based on where colors sit on the color wheel. Analogous colors are close neighbors (within about 60°) and produce soft, soothing palettes that work great for backgrounds and interfaces. Complementary colors sit on opposite sides of the wheel (180°) and deliver maximum contrast, perfect when you need an accent color that really pops. A triad takes three evenly spaced hues (120°) for a lively yet balanced result. Pastel palettes raise the lightness and dial down the saturation for a gentle look that's popular in packaging, lifestyle brands and products for kids.

Putting your palette to work in a real project

The most popular rule of thumb is 60-30-10: one dominant color for 60% of the composition (backgrounds), a secondary for 30% (sections, cards), and an accent color for 10% (buttons, links, details). Copy the HEX codes and paste them straight into Figma, Canva, PowerPoint or your site's CSS. Before you ship, check the contrast between text and background: a ratio of at least 4.5:1 keeps your text readable for everyone.
