How to brainstorm with random words

The "random word" method is a classic lateral-thinking technique: when you're stuck on a problem, you draw a noun that has nothing to do with it and force yourself to connect the two. Need a new name for a product and the generator gives you "lighthouse"? Think guidance, visibility, coastline… The forced association knocks your thinking off its usual rails and surfaces ideas that a tidy meeting would never produce. Three random words and ten minutes of free note-taking are enough — and in that first phase, no idea gets thrown away.

Games and activities with your words

A handful of random nouns is all you need to improvise dozens of games: sketch the word and have others guess it, act it out without speaking, take turns building a story that has to include every word, or race to find as many rhymes as possible in one minute. Random words are also great for language learners (one new word a day, used in three sentences) and for creative writing practice: a short story built around five mandatory words is a fantastic workout for any writer.
